Sorrento

Sorrento is a small town overlooking the Gulf of Naples, and it rises on a hill overhanging the sea. It is also the entrance to the famous and picturesque Sorrento Peninsula. It appears as though the name “Sorrento” derives from the Greek verb “surreo”, meaning “to merge”, which refers to the waters that used to come down the closeby valleys and ended up merging into the sea. Sorrento is the birthplace of Torquato Tasso, author of “Jerusalem Delivered”. From the ‘800, the city constituted the destination of many intellectuals from North Europe who used to reach these areas of Southern Italy for a “Grand Tour” to best learn about Mediterranean history.

Sorrento can be visited anytime: as a matter of fact, the city is the ideal combination for those who look for a stay in the name of art, nature as well as relaxation.

The heart of the city is Piazza Tasso, the square where it is possible to admire a monument dedicated to the homonymous writer.

The square is crossed by Corso Italia, the most famous shopping street of the town where it is possible to find various restaurants that serve the renowned “gnocchi alla sorrentina”.

Close to Piazza Tasso, you can get the chance to reach the Public Gardens that peak on the sea.

Thanks to their location, it is characterized by the presence of secular trees and it is famous for offering one of the most beautiful views of the whole Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius. A very pleasant walk on a panoramic, downhill street, allows you to reach Marina Piccola and Sorrento Port in a matter of minutes.
