Rising mainly in vertical upon a rock overlooking the sea, Positano is a destination that cannot be missed during a tour on the Amalfi Coast: it is a city to discover through its colored houses, stairways, boutiques and lemon-infused small alleys by which tourists from all over the world stroll to fully enjoy it.
According to an ancient legend, the name “Positano” derives from an event that happened around the XII Century, when a ship carrying a Byzantine representation of the Virgin Mary and Child spotted offshore the coast, was caught in a terrible seastorm. It is said that the sailors heard a strange voice saying “Posa, Posa” (“stop, stop”) coming from the Virgin Mary’s representation. The scared sailors then decided to stop in this small town, which at the time was a fishman village, and delivered the Virgin to its inhabitants who built the Saint Mary of Assumption church in her honor, nearby the beach.
For its structure, Positano is called “the vertical Pyramid of the Amalfi Coast”. It is a city to explore on foot through its numerous stairways in order to discover its true essence.
